Introduction

Oasis was developed in a joint venture between BHC and ELAN Technologies Corporation of the United Kingdom. Oasis has been successfully implemented in many hospitals in Europe , the UK and South Africa by ELAN Corporation. BHC has so far implemented Oasis in 14 large hospitals in the Middle East.

Oasis is a comprehensive and integrated system encompassing all areas related to healthcare activities: patient administration, patient care, support services, finance & administration and management information to meet any hospital's requirements. It is functionally rich and modular in structure with modules addressing specific functional requirements. Due to this modular nature it is easily adaptable to suit the requirements of varying sizes of hospitals; it allows for a module-by-module implementation based on the specific requirements of the hospital under consideration.

Oasis operates under state-of-the-art client-server environment and uses industry-standard hardware, software and networking technology. The software works under the most popular and sophisticated relational database management system, ORACLE, and can be implemented under UNIX environment. The application has been developed using the latest and most powerful application development tools that allow for easy modifications. Oasis offers unparalleled portability, connectivity and central / distributed database support:

Application Portability: The system can run on a wide range of hardware platforms - PCs, PC-Local-Area Networks, Unix / proprietary operating systems and wide-area-networks. This allows the software to be implemented across hospitals, which are of varying size and specialty. Appropriate computers of different sizes, functionality and even of different makes for each site can be selected and the modules relevant for that site can then be implemented.

Data Portability: The data can also be ported from one site to another. To cite an example, a Laboratory System requires a lot of initial set up consisting of defining various tables like test codes, reference ranges, quality control criteria, work list formats, etc. This is a time consuming process requiring a lot of thought and effort from the supervisory staff. If this initial set up data can be transported to another hospital along with the application, it would eliminate a lot of effort while setting up the laboratory application in each and every hospital. This would bring in a high degree of standardization and uniformity in the operations of hospitals under the control of Healthcare Technologies.

Application Level Connectivity: On-line access to patient past medical history not only improves the quality of treatment but also reduces the cost of patient care by minimizing repetitive treatment. This is achieved by efficient application level connectivity across two computer systems using Oasis . Such a level of connectivity eliminates delays and inaccuracies normally associated with telephone or paper based communication. The improved turnaround time associated with functions such as referral appointments and laboratory reports will result in better health care.

Central Distributed Database: An advanced HMIS captures a variety of patient data including demographic details, treatment notes, investigation results, discharge summaries etc. From the network management point of view it is preferable if the captured data is stored at the originating location, but made available to the doctors on the terminal, on demand. Oasis offers the following advantages of distributed databases in a network environment:

- High local processing power

- System capabilities chosen based on the intended applications.

- Flexibility in application level changes and system operations

- Incentives to the users to adapt the system to the front end tools with which they are familiar.

Oasis functionality is designed to operate in hospitals in the Arab World as well as western environments. It offers a user-friendly working environment with automated and flexible user interface. The system offers a menu-based approach with a flexible and easy-to-use menu generator to meet implementation requirements.

Once the database is conceived and set up end-users could manipulate them to suit their needs. Oasis offers an easy to use report writer, facility for ad-hoc queries and automated & flexible data entry interfaces. Interfaces to graphical and statistical packages are also available for data analysis and presentation.

Oasis modules contain user-controlled tables [code and description], which define the various types of basic data. The size and structure of these codes is user definable. Change or deletion of these codes is controlled to prevent inconsistent data.

Oasis provides support for automated data capture including the use of various types of bar code readers, interfaces to on-line analyzers and image scanners.

Oasis is Multilanguage product (Arabic and English). An integrated Hospital Information System has an impact on the entire hospital, as clerical, administrative, paramedical and medical staff will use it. Oasis has bilingual capabilities to store patient demographic data and other administrative details in English and Arabic.

The already feature rich functionality of Oasis is being continuously improved on an on-going basis in order to provide the best possible value to BHC clients. Future plans include further enhancements and integration with newly emerging technologies such as imaging. BHC is committed to the Oasis product and assures your esteemed hospital of providing high quality services to ensure a smooth implementation and successful completion of the project.
